What is Homoeopathy?

Article by Karlie Popek ND

  What is Homoeopathy?

Homoeopathy is a natural system of medicine developed by German physician and chemist, Dr Samuel Hahnemann, which employs a variety of plant, animal, and mineral substances in very small doses to stimulate the body’s own healing powers.  Over the past 200 years, the clinical effectiveness of homoeopathy has been clearly established, and today it is widely accepted and used throughout the world.

Homoeopathy is based on the principle of ‘like cures like’.  The basic belief behind this principle is that a substance can produce symptoms in a healthy person similar to those being treated in a sick person.  Hahnemann found that illnesses could be cured by using small doses of these substances if given on the basis of similarity of symptoms.

An example of this is coffee, which stimulates the nervous system and increases the production of urine in a healthy person.  A homoeopathic dose of coffee, on the other hand, can relieve unusual mental activity, sleeplessness and excessive urination.

How does Homoeopathy work?

Homoeopathy helps to strengthen a person’s health and vitality by acting as a catalyst and stimulating the body’s own ability to initiate a positive healing response.  This gentle response effectively heals from the inside out.  Homoeopathic medicines are completely safe to take and are free from the toxic side effects often associated with prescription medications.

How are Homoeopathic Remedies made?

Homoeopathic remedies begin with part of the original substance being dissolved in a solution of alcohol – this is known as the “Mother Tincture”.  The mother tincture is then diluted many times in either an alcohol/water solution or milk sugar (lactose).  After each dilution the solution is shaken vigorously (succussed), which ‘activates’ the remedy.  This process of dilution and succussion is referred to as potentisation, which brings out the curative powers of a potential healing agent while removing all physical toxicity.  The more a remedy is diluted, the more effective and powerful it becomes.

There are three scales used in the preparation of the remedies: the decimal or X potency, which uses a ratio of 1:10; the centesimal or C potency, which uses a ratio of 1:100; and the LM potency, which uses a ratio of 1:50,000.

The centesimal (C) and decimal (X) preparations are readily available and ideal for self-treatment and for the management of simple acute problems.  The centesimal scale was the first method of preparation developed by Hahnemann during the early years of homoeopathy, and is prepared using the following technique:

1 part mother tincture is added to 99 parts alcohol and water solution and succussed (shaken vigorously) 10 times to produce a “1C” remedy.  1 part 1C is then added to 99 parts alcohol and water solution and succussed 10 times to produce a “2C” remedy.  1 part 2C is then added to 99 parts alcohol and water solution and succussed 10 times to produce a “3C” remedy, and so on.  For a 30C remedy, the process is repeated 30 times.  The higher the number, the more potent the remedy.

The same process applies for an (X) potency, except that the ratio is 1:10 instead of 1:100.  So, to begin the process, 1 part mother tincture is added to 9 parts of alcohol and water solution and succussed 10 times to produce a “1X” remedy, and so on.

How do you take Homoeopathic Remedies?

Generally, homoeopathic remedies are taken for as long as the symptoms being treated are present.  Once the symptoms subside, the dosage may be reduced or stopped, as per the product instructions.
